Map directions from Las Vegas to Nelson Ghost Town

Once you get off the 95 freeway and head east on Nelson Cutoff Rd (NV-165 E), the next 19.5 spectacular miles to the Colorado river is a motorcyclist dream.

If you are a motorcyclist, you should get familiar with Butler Motorcycle Maps. This stretch of Nelson Road entering Eldorado Canyon is rated G2 (Better Roads). One you should definitely pursue and ride.

You can go off-roading in the Eldorado Canyon, however, please make sure to preserve the landscape and the Cacti when you go off-road. We owe ourselves to be responsible riders and preserve the fragile nature. Don’t be a dirt bag!

NELSON GHOST TOWN

Discovered by the Spaniards in 1775 as El Dorado which essentially means “City of Gold”. This was an area rich in gold, silver, copper and lead.

The land was mostly settled by Civil War deserters, and was the site of one of the largest booms the state of Nevada ever encountered.

The town saw constant disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes which resulted in wanton killings.

Many of the army deserters from the civil war took refuge in this town due to its remote location and as a result there was rampant lawlessness and violence.

Gold and silver were discovered here in 1859 and the rush began in 1861.

Today this desolate tourist spot with a population of 37 is incredibly popular with photographers.

Photography will cost $10 per hour

Flying Drones costs $15 per hour

The owners live on the property and is how they make their living. So please be considerate and check-in before you wander off.

Please pay attention to all rules and regulations and be respectful.

This is not an actual military plane crash, in reality, this is a movie set built specifically for the 2001 film 3000 Miles to Graceland.

5 miles from Nelson Ghost Town the ride culminates at the Nelson Landing by the Colorado river. This stretch of the road is rated G1 (Best Road) by Butler Motorcycle Maps and it doesn’t get any better.

NELSON’S LANDING

In its heyday, Nelson’s Landing at the Colorado river is where the steamboats would dock to pick up all the Gold, Silver, Copper and Lead to transport it out.

The entire landing and village was destroyed during a flash flood on September 14, 1974 killing nine people.

In conclusion, this trip is one of the best motorcycle rides in Nevada and should be on your “must do” list. However, make sure to ride with a full tank of gas and plan your trip accordingly as there are no services in the area.
